The economic value of two alternative ways of nitrogen abatement are calculated: recent development of cleaning capacities at sewage treatment plants and ihe use of coasral zones nitrogen sink capacity. The values calculated as cost savings obtained from the alternative technologies. The analysis reveals that the value of technologies increase for higher levels ofnutrienr reducrions to the coastal zones. It is also shown that the larger the cost oflhe replaced technologies, the higher are the values ofthe alternarive technologies. The application to Himmerfjärden estuary shows that the values can vary between SEK 1 and 15 millions, or 2/3 of total nutrient abatement costs, depending on the required total nitrogen reduction to the estuary.
